Warding off Internet threats - there are dangers on the Internet, especially for company networks. That's why Deutsche Telekom Laboratories is thinking ahead to ward off potential attacks. Now Ulrich Kühn and Roger P. Karrer from the DT Laboratories have been awarded the first "German Prize for IT Security."

Nov 29, 2006/ The prizes awarded by the Horst Görtz foundation recognize innovative IT security technologies that have been developed in Germany. Kühn and Karrer were chosen from a total of 45 applications and awarded with the amount of 40,000 euros for taking third place. "The prize motivates us and at the same time obliges us to use the prize money for further research and development in a way beneficial to the foundation's goals," said Ulrich Kühn.

The researchers have developed a concept with which companies can protect themselves from so-called "Denial of Service" attacks. A control system checks whether the incoming IP packets are coming from an authenticated computer. If they are not, the packets are not allowed to pass.

Peter Möckel, head of Deutsche Telekom's Laboratories: "The research area of 'inherent security' is one of the five central innovation topics in the Deutsche Telekom Group.
