The Ambient Life project is investigating how “signs of life” such as breathing and pulse can be reproduced on mobile devices. Using a servo motor and a vibration unit, the device can signal its status, such as missed events or critical battery level. This is done by emulating natural signs of life through constant movements imitating breathing, heart beat or muscular contractions. This solution focuses on the person, exploiting cognitive mechanisms which rely on familiar, natural signals, on things that are a matter of course.
