​The quality of multimedia services depends on all kinds of factors. The objective of the Assessment of IP-based Applications department is to research and make measurable the quality of IP-based multimedia services as perceived by the user.

This research deals with questions about the transfer of multimedia data as well as features of applications used from the user’s perspective. Particular emphasis is placed on the possibilities that converging, IP-based networks offer for innovative multimedia services. The research is therefore of a holistic nature and encompasses all levels of communication.

User-centric investigations
The department is headed by Prof. Dr. Alexander Raake. “Valid quality assessments can only be made by the user in the actual usage situation, since there is no ‘one quality’,” he explains. The subjective quality impression must be made accessible from the outside using appropriate assessment or other measurement methods. Instrumental methods for predicting quality serve to complement these complex procedures efficiently. The focus of the research is on voice, audio and video applications.
