​In telecommunications, terminal devices and services must be self-explanatory. Our Intuitive Usability research focuses on achieving exactly that level of user-friendliness.

Der Begriff der Qualität und Gebrauchstauglichkeit (engl. Usability) hat eine herausragende Bedeutung in der Informations- und Kommunikationstechnik, sowie der Informatik erlangt. Um Benutzern eine optimale Qualität und Gebrauchstauglichkeit im Umgang mit technischen Systemen und Diensten erfahrbar zu machen, müssen Qualitätsaspekte in allen Phasen der Planung, Konzeption, Implementierung und Optimierung berücksichtigt werden.

Die Forschung der Arbeitsgruppe gliedert sich in folgende sechs Bereiche:

Quality
Messung und Modellierung der Wahrnehmung multimodaler Dienste zur Steigerung der Qualität.

Usability
Messung und Optimierung der Usability von Human Computer Interfaces unter der Einbeziehung aller Phasen des Usability Engineering Lifecylces.

Mobile and physical interaction
Design und Optimierungder Schnittstelle zwischen Mensch und Technikim mobilen Kontext und in der Interaktion mit Umgebungen

Speech and multimedia technology
Verarbeitung und Klassifikation multimedialer Daten zur Bereitstellung neuer Informationen, Dienste und Interaktionsformen.

Audio technology
Algorithmen und Interaktions-Technologien für die 3-dimensionale Aufnahme und Generierung von Schallfeldern

Usable Security and Privacy
Evaluierung und Modellierung von Nutzerverhalten im Umgang mit IT-Systemen mit Relevanz für Sicherheit und Privatsphäre

Every day, people discover how difficult it can be to figure out today’s technologies. That’s why researchers at Telekom Laboratories are developing products to increase usability.

What developers find totally logical can easily confound users. One reason for this is that developers still have too little interaction with target groups during the design phase. As a result, they focus more on the product’s functionalities than on the context in which it is used. Focusing on usability can greatly improve the quality and, with it, the sales of interactive products.

Satisfied Customers

Since April 2007, Prof. Sebastian Möller has been in charge of Intuitive Usability research at Telekom Innovation Laboratories (T-Labs). “The key question for us is whether or not users are satisfied with a service or product,” he says. “I work with leading experts in a wide range of disciplines from around the world to ensure that they are. What’s more, our cooperation with Telekom enables us to conduct basic research while focusing on real-world applications.”
